I know I have written about sports many times, but this time I have some big news. As you may have noticed, camp is having some big changes this year. Don’t worry, all the original, classic, things are still here, we just have new additions to the sports family. The new sports are archery, gaga ball (more on that later), canoeing, and possibly others.

I hope you all realize that a little change is a good thing, and is needed to keep camp fresh from year to year. I am very excited about the new sports at camp, and am excited to see how they play out!

Recreation ???

I know a lot of you have wanted to know what we are doing this year in recreation – Christmas in July, Carnival, or Scavenger Hunt? Well, the answer is (as of now) none of those! This year we will be doing a TREASURE hunt.

There was a cub week meeting with all the staff today, and I have all the new planned information.

I am so excited for Cub Cruise! Thanks to all the 145 cubs that attended last year, without you we couldn’t have the great program we have today.

Cubs’ Week or Cub Weeks

Well, where do I start. Um… Let me tell you a story.
Less than five years ago, there used to be tons of campers who would attend this program. At one time, there were enough kids for three whole weeks of activities. Gradually, it went to two weeks, and eventually dwindled down to one. However, this past year numbers were on the rise again and I hope this trend continues.

So, even as the address for the Cub Week Site states, it used to be cub weeks. Lots of families even still say it that way. That’s perfectly fine. Now, however, the correct term is either Cubs’ Week or just Cub Week. This post is just to let you know why this has changed.

What is Camp Okoboji???

Camp Okoboji is the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Camp located on a 29-acre wooded peninsula on West Lake Okoboji in Milford, Iowa.

Next year, Concordia Cub Week 2012. I know what you’re thinking, “But Anya, we barely even got done with Cub Week 2011.” Yes, camp does seem so very far away at the moment. I do not know the theme, nor does the dean, nor the staff, nor anyone on earth. I believe in November, the staff will get together to discuss those things. Like the all important question What will be the theme? or even What will the dates be? I will make sure to keep you guys updated on anything new as soon as I hear about it. Also keep an eye on the website for updates as well.

So Far, So Good!

Concordia Cub Week has been really fun, and really hot! Every day the heat index has been well over 100 degrees. On Sunday, Check – In went very smoothly and everyone got settled into their cabins. Get acquainted night produced well over 30 winners for who has travelled the farthest, longest and shortest first name, and different name games.

Monday morning started out with eggs and bacon, then devotions about how we packed for Cub Week, but God gives us things we always have with us like prayer and His promises.
Naphtali and Issachar were the first cabins to report about what they like about camp so far in Kabin Korn. One thing they both seem to agree on is that they like their counselors!
The Grand March was an exciting five rounds of couples coming down the basketball courts, ending in five groups who played Life saver pass, hula hoop pass, arches, and King of the Mountain.

Tuesday – Pancakes with Egg Muffins. A devotion in the morning was held talking about how we are never alone, God is our friend and we can talk to Him about anything.
In sports, Girls Division 2 and the Boys division both have undefeated teams – the Scuba Divers and the Mountain Bikers, 4-0. In Girls division 1, The Time Travelers are in the lead 3-1.
In the carnival there were 19 different games to play with over 3,000 prizes, along with free popcorn. Everyone had a blast, and won lots of fun souvenirs.

To check – in simply go to the Christian Life Center. If you have never been to camp before it is the large building at the top of the hill. Everyone else will be going there so it should be fairly easy to find once you’ve gotten to camp. There are two lines for check – in based on last name so make sure you are in the right one. From there go to your assigned cabin which you will be told where it is, and move in.

Recreation – What is it and Where to Go???

Here is the second installment of last – minute things for Cub Week 2011 – Recreation. Recreation is a nightly time for Cubs to play fun and goofy games and have fellowship with other Christians. It is led by Pastor Mick Wolfram (check out that interview http://typetoday104.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/an-interview-with-pastor-wolfram-recreation/) and is different every night.

Sunday Night – Getting to Know you Games
Play games that help you learn other campers names, cubs in your cabins, the counselors, and staff. Where? Behind the Dining Hall.

Monday Night – Grand March
Pair up in groups and skip down the basketball courts as two, four, eight, and finally sixteen people to eventually play games like lifesaver pass, hula hoop races, and King of the Mountain. Where? Basketball Courts

Tuesday Night – Cub Olympics
Compete with your cabin to win fun prizes by winning at Tug of War, Over and Under, Water Balloon races, and more. Where? Soccer Field.

Wednesday Night – Anything Goes
Eat pudding without your hands, drink from baby bottles, see how high you can throw a water balloon, how big a bubble you can blow, how long you can hula hoop, etc. Compete as individuals to score points for your cabin. Where? Behind the Dining Hall.

Thursday Night – Carnival
Play Carnival Games including throwing water balloons at the Staff. Where? Basketball Courts.

Friday Night – Group Games
With your groups from Monday play more circle games and do some line dancing. Where? Basketball courts.
